I know a lot of people that do this but I wouldn't because the gangs (MS-10 and Mara 12) will rob and kill you. Why don't you just hop on a plane? It's cheaper, easier, and safer.

It depends on where along the border you are entering Mexico as to what roads you take. One piece of advice I would give you is, that your car insurance that you have here in the USA is no good in Mexico. As soon as you cross the border find a place that sells insurance and get some. If you get in an accident you can be jailed. My brother spent 4 years in a Mexican prison for driving the wrong way on a one way street! He didn't know that you have to bribe the policemen to get out of being arrested. He never got his car back.

If you have not done so before, don't do it. The crime in Mexico has soared in the past decade and even Mexicans are afraid to travel a lot of the places in the country. It isn't like it used to be. This is all very sad, but it is the way it is. I have been to Mexico more times than I can count. I now only go to places where there a lots of tourists. Gringos are like targets in other areas and subject to robbery and even physical crime.
Sorry . . .

I agree with Susan. The roads in the country can often be in poor repair, and if your car breaks down, there's no telling how long you could be stranded.
Even the cities aren't safe, because of the crime. Kidnapping and robberies have become more common, and Americans are easy targets.
