You absolutely positively DO NOT need a passport to get back from Mexico if you are a US citizen or to get into Mexico. You do need a government issued id and a birth certificate. When you go into Mexico, you will get a tourist card. You should have that when you exit Mexico.

"In answer to a frequently asked question these days, no passport is needed to travel to Mexico in 2006. Beginning December 31, 2006, you will need a passport for air or sea travel and beginning December 31, 2007, you will need a passport for land travel to Mexico and Canada." Quoted from below.

Oh my goodness.....have you gone to the post office lately? (Which is where you can apply for them now.) The Caribean, and Mexico, via air or sea, started requiring a passport as of 1/1/06. By land, Canada and Mexico will required a passport by 1/1/07. The rest of the world, by 1/1/08.

No, a drivers license will do, or even a state ID. You do not need a passport. I've traveled to several parts of Mexico and have even gone through the border at Tijuana and been waved through without any ID.

You may have trouble getting into Mexico tho, if you're flying.
