You don't need a passport for Mexico-US travel if you are American. You simple cross the border and present normal ID.
However, if you ever wanted to, you could always apply for a passport or replacement passport at a US embassy.

I have never needed a passport to get back in, just a valid US license.
With no id you would be detained and have to furnish enough information for yur ID to be verified. You would definitely be fingerprinted and held for some time at the US border. Mexico would not hold you the US Border agents would.

Two words...sweat shop. No, just joking! I depends where you are. In the state of Sonora or in certain area's you don't even have to have a passport to go there and vacation. If you have any problems just go to the border and show them your ID. No ID? Just tell them who you are, they will pull you over the border and do a check. If nothing else find an American embassy.

I think they might make you stay in a motel near the airport or something unless you have some-one send you the passport which im not sure you can do. i dont really know about this stuff, though.

depends on whether you are a US citizen or not.
If not, you will have lot of trouble, ensure that you call all the documents that shows your legal status here.
aslo, ensure that you have a multi-entry visa.
worse comes to worse, you will have to ask your friends to mail those to you, in case you are not allowed back.
