I was in Palenque 2 years ago on medical mission project. They were very concerned about their image and a TV station interviewed us about our feelings of safety. We had no problems with the very friendly people. I noticed most tourists there were from Europe, however. Would agree that a guided tour of the ruins would be most helpful, and avoid being alone on back streets. As always, just be careful.

Yes, and most of southern Mexico is safe for turists. Even Mexico City is not as dangerous as it is said. Palenque should be a better trip if you get a guided tour, it's a lot easier to do that. If you want more ideas of travelling in Mexico, check the site below

Yes, it's rather safe, although it is better to avoid travelling by night in the proximities (e.g. road to Ocosingo).

Hotels in the proximities of the ruins, and in the village are all right too.
