I travel to Mexico all the time. I'm a US Citizen, and I always present my US Passport.

That should do the trick!

A US Passport is the ideal. However if you don't have, then you need a US Driver's license and US birth certificate. If you don't have those, then bring naturalization papers and/or your green card.

btw, I was checked not only when returning but when departing for Mexico.

Soon, it will be a U.S. Passport. I do not know when the regulation takes effect.

Normally, I believe you just need your state issued driver's license. However, the new regulations will soon require passports for Canada and Mexico travel.

Proof of citizenship. The best is a passport. But your Drivers licence and birth certificate will suffice.

A state issued i.d. and a birth certificate or a s.s.c. You do not need a passport to go until dec. 31st 2006

You might need a passport if you are flying. Check out the link below.
