Mexico City (Ciudad de México) may be the capital of Mexico and an amazing town surrounded by mighty mountain ranges. To see this city you are able to choose the best choice hotelbye . The city's area is certainly breathtaking. Two spectacular snow-covered volcanoes, Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl, tower over it using their more of 5,000 meters. Mexico City also preserves numerous reminders of its past and those are issues that entice the tourists. The defeating heart of Mexico City is Zócalo - the Plaza de la Constitución (Constitution Square) - where in fact the country's first constitution was proclaimed in 1813 and now's one of the very visited host to Mexico City because it's among the world's greatest squares. In Mexico City you can even visit: the National Palace, the Metropolitan Cathedral and the Templo Mayor.

I would heavily agree that Ciudad Juarez and Tijuana to be the most dangerous cities in Mexico. There's a reason why so many women are brutally murdered every year in Ciudad Juarez.

Mexico City is safer than most metropolitan cities in the US and if you include the population of the State of Mexico that's a part of the city, it has a population of 20 million which is one of the most populated cities on the planet. The homicide rate in Mexico City has dropped hugely in the last 10 years making it as safe as New York City. I know several people that were victims of crime, but mostly it was petty theft and muggings of cash and cellphones which can happen anywhere.

Morelia has been the target of bad publicity as of late from the army fighting drug lord of La Familia, but I know a guy that travels there frequently and he keeps on telling me everytime he's there the city is always business as usual and very safe and quiet. I lived in a region with some drug violence and it was actually very safe and peaceful.

Mexican Newspaper El Universal lists the following as the most dangerous in Mexico:

1.Ciudad Juárez 2. Culiacán 3.Tijuana

other very dangerous cities are:

Mexico City, Nogales, Ciudad Obregón, Hermosillo, Mexicali, Veracruz, Torreón, Reynosa, Matamoros, Nuevo Laredo, Chihuahua, Durango , Oaxaca, Saltillo, Acapulco, Querétaro, Monterrey and Toluca.

I would add that I personally consider Mexico City to be the safest of the large cities considering it has a population of over 9 million people.

First may I explain that this violence we are experiencing is due to the huge demand of illegal drugs bought and consumed by Americans and Canadians and little to do with the consumption of drugs by Mexico. What I am saying is if Americans and Canadians did not buy and consume illegal drugs there would be no problem. The violence stems from the control over distribution routes into the US and the Mexican Government trying to stop this by pressure from the US Government and the export of illegal firearms from the US to Mexico. You see here in Mexico we have gun control you can not legally own a firearm without a permit. So all the killings you hear about are from weapons obtained illegally in the US and smuggled back across the boarder into Mexico. Until the US and Canada install stiffer penalties for use and sale of illegal drugs this problem will never end. It must start in the US and Canada not here! So whenever you roll a dubbie or cut a line remember you are the problem that we are suffering for.

Off my soap box. The northern boarder towns are the worst. Acapulco has of lately seen it's share of violence. Smaller towns are immune and are safer. But as a tourist you are not a target. Would you advise me not to go to Tucson because of the latest violence? I didn't think so. So taking care of where you are what you are doing and who you are doing it with you will be safe.

Have fun and "Bienvenidos a Mexico"

Tiajuana, Nogales, Juarez. It's JUST the border. With the exception of Morelia. Unfortunately, Morelia has had more than it's share of drug-related violence. It's a shame because Morelia is stunningly beautiful.

Aside from those 4 cities ... and other kinds of problems in Mexico City ... you're in far more danger in the average American city than you are anywhere in Mexico.
