Driving down the scenic toll road is pretty nice. I've been as far as Ensenada. Rosarito Beach is a nice resort town with some decent hotels. Puerto Nuevo is a small town famous for its lobster. Ensenada is like Rosarito but bigger.
Be sure to get Mexican Auto Insurance. There's several places to obtain it online. Its just a liability thing more than anything and if the Federales catch you without it, its a problem when yer in an accident.

I am from Puerto Vallarta, is it around there. Like going to Guadalajara? Well, again I am from Puerto Vallarta, which is a beautiful, peaceful beeach place. You will love it, the best restarurants in town are there. If you go, never forget to go to "El Malecon" it's a long sidewalk very close to the beach, you will breath fresh air, see the birds flying on top of the sunset, you will even see dolphins jumping around. It's clean and hot!
