I also agree with the earlier posters. My suggestion is to rent a car and tour around the Yucatan yourself. Staying near the ruin sites has some real advantages -- the ability to catch any evening light shows, be there early in the morning before it gets hot, be there when it is less crowded, and the ability to spend the hottest part of the day at the pool.
Many are worth a visit. Here are a few (most favorite first): Palenque, Uxmal, Tikal (Guatemala), Chichen, Coba and, yes, Tulum (only because of the beach). There are many other wonderful sites that are also worth a visit.
At Chichen, both the Mayaland and the Hacienda Chichen are basic but ooze charm and location.
I would also stay at least a few days in Merida -- a true colonial ciy. It is everything that Cancun is not.

One great place to see Mayan pyramids and other structures is the Yucatan peninsula. It is easy to get cheap flights to Cancun. From there you can drive or take tours to the Mayan sites like Chichen Itza, Tulum, Uxmal and Coba.

I agree with peaceful, but I recommend also to set Merida as base camp, and drive from there to the sites.
Also interesting and not very visited is Calakmul (in the border with Guatemala).

While you have to work a little harder to get there, I think the Maya ruins at Palenque are superb. Beautiful setting, probably less crowded.
